One effect of the riots, I anticipate, will be to further highlight the disunited nature of society in the so-called United Kingdom.
What is the "solution" to the riots?
Condemn them as "mindless" criminality or violence? Send in the Army to supress the riots?
Or consider that such riots have causes? And sensibly address those causes?
But if the riots have causes it requires some radical thinking and political dexterity on the part of Government.
Sadly, I suspect that Cameron and Clegg are incapable of anything other than political fudge and cover-up.

London Riots - The Royal Wedding Year "coincidence"
In 1981 there was a Royal Wedding and urban riots in London.
In 2011 there was a Royal Wedding and urban riots in London.
Coincidence?
Or is something about pampered, pretty patricians poncing around in public deeply provocative?

London Riots - The Olympic Games is a provocative obscenity
London's burning. At least parts of it have been.
And the forthcoming Olympic Games is burning bright in the imaginations of the British media.
So far at least, I have heard nothing in the media about the spending of billions on a mere sporting event as being a provocation.
But is it?
People like Seb Coe can wet themselves with excitement, no doubt.
But what message does the Olympic indulgence send to the poorer communities of London?
One message is that the ego of Seb Coe and his ilk is much more important to the powerful of this country than they, mere poor human beings, are.
The desires of an athletic few are indulged.
The needs of the poorer, deprived masses are ignored.
The "natural naziism" of David Cameron and those who preceded him is grotesquely expressed.
In my mind the Olympic Games of 2012 are an obscenity.
No, don't worry. I haven't been rioting and I won't be. But that doesn't make the Olympic Games any less obscene as a way to spend public money.

London Riots - The "mindless" commentary from senior politicians
One of the most shameful aspects of the reaction among politicians to the disturbances in London is the repetitive and vacuous use of the term "mindless" to refer to those taking part in the riots.
Contrary to the lies peddled by people like Nick Clegg and Simon Hughes in the media the participants in the riots are not "mindless".
They are angry and they are alienated from a corrupt and dishonest political system in the United Kingdom.
Alienated from a corrupt political system whose self-indulgence leads it to spend billions on a mere sporting event while ignoring the much more basic needs of their fellow human beings.
Yes, Mr Clegg, the poor, alienated black youth are human beings.
They are angry at a corrupt, dishonest and racist Metropolitan Police Service.
It's all very well for people like Clegg and Hughes to pontificate about how things are "better" than in the 1980s (when racist Police thuggery was rife in London).
Tell that to a black kid searched for the umpteenth time.
Does he think "Oh, it's much better than 20 years ago. Back then I'd have been beaten up too."
I don't think so.
He is outraged by repeated, casual Police racism.
As the Chinese curse apocryphally says, "We live in interesting times.".

Phone hacking inquiry: Surely Lord Leveson has to resign
The various live blogs of the mainstream media are reporting a previously unpublicised contact between Lord Leveson and the Murdoch family.

In that context surely Lord Leveson has to resign as the judge involved in the phone hacking inquiry.

15.23 The Evening Standard reports that Lord Justice Leveson, the judge who will lead the inquiry into the phone-hacking scandal, has links to the Murdoch family:
Opinion Lord Justice Leveson has attended two evening events at the London home of PR boss Matthew Freud - who is married to Rupert Murdoch's daughter Elisabeth - as well as having another dinner with him. The revelations raised questions over why the judge had been chosen to carry out the landmark inquiry into the media, police and politicians.
A spokesman for the judge said he met the boss of Freud Communications "by chance" at a dinner in February last year. Mr Freud then offered to help the Sentencing Council on how to promote public confidence in the criminal justice system.
"To that end, in his capacity as Chairman of the Sentencing Council, and with the knowledge of the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Justice Leveson attended two large evening events at Mr Freud's London home: these were on 29 July 2010 and 25 January 2011," the spokesman added. Prior to his appointment to the inquiry, Lord Justice Leveson told the Government about the links.
Downing Street said Lord Leveson had been appointed on the recommendation of the Lord Chief Justice "in line with the procedure of the Inquiries Act 2005." He was the only proposed candidate. "He has been entirely open about attending these events," a spokesman added. A spokeswoman for Freud Communications declined to comment saying they were private events.
In that context surely Lord Leveson has to resign as the judge involved in the phone hacking inquiry.

Phone hacking, Sally Murrer and Sadiq Khan
I'm posting a link to a news story about what may have been phone hacking in the Thames Valley Police area. See Journalist fears she is "smokescreen" in Sadiq Khan bugging scandal.
The Guardian reports that the case was later thrown out by the judge. See Thames Valley police leak case against Sally Murrer thrown out
The case, at least on the surface, seems to constitute quite a different set of circumstances about the relationships involving the press, the police and politicians.
The decision to prosecute appears to have taken place while Sara Thornton was Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police (having been appointed to that post in January 2007).
Maybe Lord Leveson should look at such cases too, if he is to reach a valid and balanced conclusion.

Phone Hacking - Will the Leveson Inquiry be more trustworthy and competent than the Hutton Inquiry?
There are many good reasons for calling into question the integrity and competence of the Hutton Inquiry, not least that it failed both to identify the murder of Dr. David Kelly and the seeming criminal conspiracy to take the United Kingdom to war in Iraq.

The naive assumption permeating the media is that the upcoming Leveson Inquiry will be characterised by both integrity and competence.
Given the failures of the Hutton Inquiry, such optimistic assumptions about the Leveson Inquiry may prove to be ill-founded.
Giving the glaring failings of the Hutton Inquiry and the powerful interests affected by the various strands of the phone hacking saga, surely it is profoundly naive to expect a fully transparent and honest inquiry from Lord Leveson as being inevitable?
